==Plot==

Tess Thorne is a successful cozy mystery writer who has a fear of flying, and will only take speaking engagement miles away from her home. She goes to a Massachusetts library for a meet and greet with fans. After the event, the woman who had invited her, Ramona Norville, suggests an alternative route for Tess to take on the way home which would shave an hour off her drive. However, on the shortcut, Tess' Toyota Prius rolls over nail-studded pieces of wood which lie across the road, giving her a flat tire. The incident happens by an abandoned gas station. With her cell phone not having a signal, Tess hopes that a good Samaritan will stop.
Shortly afterwards, a big man in a pickup offers to assist Tess. At first, the trucker seems to be eager to help, but he soon darkens. Tess realizes that the driver had set out the road hazard. He knocks Tess out and proceeds to brutally rape and beat her, before finally choking her to unconsciousness. She later wakes up and feigns death as he stashes her body in a culvert and drives away. After the man has left, Tess escapes, but sees several other murdered women, all victims of the same man, lying dead in the pipe. Tess escapes to try and find some help, but as she walks, she worries that the attack will create a scandal. She believes that people would write that she was "asking for it", and her name as an author would be dragged through the mud. She decides that she cannot mentally endure another trauma, and instead goes home without telling anyone.
While she is at home, she comes to terms with her attack, and decides she has to do something about it. A waitress at a local bar (not far from where she was attacked), calls Tess to inform her that her Prius in the parking lot, and to pick it up before that evening. When Tess arrives, she speaks to Betsy (the waitress) and learns some details of her attacker (while not revealing how she knows him). The two bond of being victims of violence at the hands of men (Tess had blamed her bruises and cuts on an abusive boyfriend). On the drive home, Tess hears Tom (her GPS) talking to her about the attack, and helps her put together clues that makes her realize that Ramona planned the attack. That night, Tess (with the direction of Tom) takes her pistol and drives to Ramona's house to confront her. Initially, Ramona denies knowledge of the attack, and the women get into a struggle. When Ramona wrestles the gun away from Tess, she reveals that she helped orchestrate the attack for her son, and that Tess is a terrible writer. She pulls the trigger, which fired on an empty chamber. Tess grabs a kitchen knife and stabs Ramona, before shooting her in the head. While Tess was washing the blood off of her in the bathroom, she spots her diamond earrings that her attacker took from her during the rape.
In Ramona's house, Tess finds clues that lead her to her attacker, Big Driver. She scouts a gas station, and he shows up in his rig. She notes the address on the side of the truck, and Tom directs her to the address. Before getting there, she spots Big Driver's rig and stops. Big Driver's green pickup (that he was driving the day of the rape) pulls into the lot. Tess runs out from her hiding spot and shoots the driver in the head before realizing that the man was not Big Driver, but rather his little brother, Little Driver. Tess laments killing an innocent man, and at the urging of Doreen (one of the characters from her books), pushes forward to "finish the job". Tess then drives to the programmed address, which turns out to be the home of Big Driver. Tess breaks into his house, and finds a room with incriminating photos of all the women Big Driver has killed, in addition to pictures taken of both brothers together next to the bodies of the victim. Tess remembers Little Driver being at her attack with a camera, and realizes that both brothers, in addition to their mother, are all equally guilty. Tess gathers the photos of her, and hears some activity coming from an outside work shed. Tess finds Big Driver working in his shed, and confronts him. She shoots him twice before the gun is empty, and Big Driver chases her outside. Tess hits him in the head with a board full of nails (similar to the ones that caused Tess to have a flat tire). While Big Driver is trying to get away, Tess calmly reloads her gun and shoots him in the groin where he dies. Doreen appears, and urges Tess to leave quickly.
Back at home, it is revealed that an anonymous tip lead police to the bodies of the other victims in the drainage pipe, and Big Driver's house with all the incriminating photos. Tess does not plan on going to the police with any information, satisfied that the families of the missing women will finally have peace, and that the perpetrators will not harm any more women. She decides to change the focus of her mystery writings, to the approval of Doreen and her knitting club. Tess receives a phone call, whom she realizes is Betsy from the Stagger Inn, who says, "I know what you did. You go, girl" before quickly hanging up.
